FAQ

What is the World Ocean Festival?

The inaugural World Ocean Festival (June 4, 2017), hosted by the City of New York and organized by The Global Brain Foundation, is an effort to raise the voices of millions of people and organizations who care deeply about the ocean and who will stand together for its protection.

People from all over the world will be invited to join the World Ocean Festival and support the preservation and sustainable use of our ocean. Festival activities will include:

An Ocean March parade of large and small boats in the water around New York City in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard; and An Ocean Village celebration with art, education, innovation, and tools for action in support of the ocean.

Why the Ocean?

The oceans not only sustain marine life, but our own lives – connecting us all across the world, providing sustenance, transport, economies, and livelihoods. Meanwhile, illegal fishing threatens species, food security, and economies worldwide; pollution in the form of chemical run-off, spills, plastics and more damages and destroys marine life and enters our food chain, climate change is killing our coral reefs, flooding human and animal habitats, and feeding a disastrous feedback loop of rising world temperatures.

The United Nations has agreed on global goals to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind. Of these 17 Sustainable Development Goals, number 14 is to: Conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

In June 2017, world leaders will gather in New York City at the UN Ocean Conference for a high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14. They aim to develop actions and gain commitments that will reverse the decline in the health of our ocean for people, planet and prosperity.
